- Hi, I wanted to clear up a few rumors re: 68EC030. No I don't work for Motorola, but
- there have been some common misconceptions about the EC chips I'd like to clear up.
-
- >>It means that the chip does not have a fully functioning memory management
- unit. Motorola thoroughly test their chips prior to shipping - any that fail
- the MMU test but pass all others have the EC label attached to them. EC is
- supposed to stand for "EConomy" by the way.
-
- ---
-
- This is a common belief, but it is false. The EC chips are manufactured with the
- intention of having no MMU. The MMU is present, because it is cheaper to use the
- same die for all chips.
-
- When the chips are done, they will take a batch and simply not test the MMU - they
- ground it so it cannot be accessed. You cannot use the MMU at all.
-
- The money is saved in testing, which they normally test each unit rigorously. The
- chip does not cost less to manufacture, as was stated, but they are NOT chosen
- as 030 rejects. Motorola does not want to package and ship any chip that is flawed
- in any way, and a faulty MMU could indicate a flawed stamping, thus indicating problems
- that could develop elsewhere on the chip.
-
- The EC does not stand for EConomy. It means Embedded Controller, and the intention
- of the chip line is to be used for tasks where MMU is not needed. The AmigaOS does
- not use the MMU, so it can be used in the Amiga.
-
- I actually do not like this decision, as I want to purchase one of these computers
- but want an MMU for Virtual Memory purposes - also for softbooting off of other OS
- versions.
-
- However, evein if I don't like the 68EC0x0, I need to defend it a little since it is not
- true that they are bottom of the barrel rejects. If they were, Motorola wouldn't be
- manufacturing them in quantities independent of 680x0 quantities, and at a fixed
- price that is independent of how many rejects there are... they aren't rejects.
-
- Motorola has excellent quality control. How many Motorola processors have you seen fail?
- Out of every chip in the Amiga I have heard of getting fried, rarely is it the
- processor (unless it is running overheated in a system needing a fan). Usually they only
- get blown out by power surges elsewhere.
-
- The 68EC030 vs. a Pentium...
-
- The pentium is a hell of a lot faster... but if you had your computer cranking away at
- the cure for a fatal disease you had - would you rather be fast, or sure!
